How Algorithms Have Redefined the Mechanisms of Information Selection
For years, a seemingly self-evident idea has been widely repeated: social media has eliminated the traditional gatekeepers of information. With the decline of editors, journalists, and professional fact-checkers, anyone can now produce and disseminate content without any form of oversight. But have these mechanisms of selection truly disappeared?
In a recent perspective article, Dr. Alireza Valizadeh, researcher at the Zapata-Briceño Institute of Neuroscience and member of the Academy of Sciences of Iran, offers a different perspective. Information gatekeepers have not vanished; they have merely changed form. Editorial control has migrated from human actors to algorithms.
Social Media Democratized Science, but Also Introduced New Vulnerabilities
Digital platforms have brought science closer to the public than ever before. Researchers, universities, and research institutions can communicate directly with millions of people, fostering broader participation and accelerating the dissemination of knowledge.
Yet this openness comes with a trade-off. The enormous volume of information circulating every day requires someone—or something—to decide which content becomes visible and which remains largely unseen.
The fundamental question is no longer whether a selection process exists, but who performs that selection and according to which criteria.
From Editorial Judgment to the Attention Economy
Traditional media were far from perfect. Their decisions were influenced by numerous factors and were not immune to errors or biases. Nevertheless, there remained at least some degree of responsibility toward accuracy, credibility, and the public interest.
The algorithms that govern much of today's social media operate according to a different logic. Their primary objective is to maximize user attention and engagement, as these platforms derive much of their revenue from advertising and from the amount of time users spend online.
From this perspective, so-called algorithmic gatekeeping is not an accidental flaw of the system, but rather a direct consequence of the attention economy.
Two Mechanisms That Reinforce Each Other
The spread of misinformation cannot be attributed solely to algorithms, nor solely to human behavior. Both factors interact.
On the one hand, people tend to share content that is novel, surprising, or emotionally engaging. On the other hand, algorithms reward precisely those posts that generate the highest levels of interaction.
This alignment creates a feedback loop in which certain pieces of information—whether true or false—can achieve enormous reach.
Misinformation, therefore, does not arise exclusively from human biases or exclusively from automated recommendation systems. It emerges from the interaction between the two.

Although considerable debate surrounds the role of algorithms in political polarization and belief formation, the scientific evidence remains far from conclusive.
Some recent studies have shown that modifying recommendation algorithms does not necessarily produce immediate changes in users' attitudes. Other findings suggest that algorithmic effects may emerge over longer timescales and persist even after platform dynamics have been altered.
This apparent contradiction highlights a fundamental challenge: recommendation systems are extraordinarily complex and, in many cases, largely opaque even to researchers themselves.
The lack of transparency is, in itself, one of the central problems.
Artificial Intelligence Adds a New Dimension
The rise of generative artificial intelligence introduces an entirely new landscape. Today, highly realistic texts, images, voices, and videos can be produced at minimal cost and on an unprecedented scale.
This development not only increases the volume of information competing for our attention, but also makes it increasingly difficult to distinguish authentic content from synthetic creations.
In a world of hyperrealistic images and manipulated videos, even the most compelling evidence can be called into question.
Beyond Eliminating the Gatekeepers
The real issue is not the existence of filtering mechanisms. In any environment where millions of pieces of content are produced every day, some form of selection is unavoidable.
The more important question is this: what are these mechanisms optimized for, and who is accountable for them?
According to Dr. Valizadeh, the solution does not lie in eliminating gatekeeping altogether, but in developing systems that are more transparent, accountable, and guided by values that extend beyond the simple maximization of attention.
Because, ultimately, the most important question is not who controls information, but for what purpose that control is exercised.
